Who is Port Angeles?
Port Angeles is in the middle of great change in the Waterfront District.
Exciting projects are well underway like:
the revitalization of the Port Angeles Wharf and Harbortowne Mall
the renovation of the Red Lion Hotel
the renovation of Studio Bob
the renovation of the Lincoln Theatre
the construction and opening of Field Arts & Events Hall
Transformative projects that will change the way we interact with the District are on the horizon like:
New Stairs at Laurel Street (with three new street level murals)
The Marine Discovery Center
The Elwha Hotel
Condos in the Waterfront District (Anian Shores)
Hollywood Beach Seaplane Service
What will our town look like in 5 years? What about in 10?
Murals are place making. The public art of a community reflects the community. Some can argue public art also shapes the community. We do.
Throughout the Waterfront District, there are already many murals. We are proud of them. Many of these murals highlight significant historical events for the community like:
The Pacific Fleet in Port Angeles Harbor during WW2
The old MV Kalakala
The Sluicing of the Hogback
Some murals are more of a vibe like:
The Murals on Harbortowne Mall
The Murals on the Hub
The Cheshire Cat on Bourbon West
The Rail’s signage
Welly’s Ice Cream Landscape inside the Wharf
The Alley Across from the Red Goose shoes parking lot
The Family Shoe Store’s hand painted sign and red goose
These West by Northwest murals will be up for at least five years in the Waterfront District. They will shape the visual landscape of the District as other new projects are built and change our neighborhood in different ways.
Who is Port Angeles in 2025? Who do we want to be? And what do we want to look like?
A gateway to the National Park?
An urban and creative hub on the Peninsula?
A portal to Canada?
An unprepared hamlet facing an impending Godzilla-level attack? (…hopefully not…)
This is for you to figure out.
